Soy enteropathy is an intolerance to soy protein (soy sprue) in the intestines.
What happens when you eat soy products?
When soy protein enters the small intestine, the mucous membrane reacts to it as a toxin. As a result, atrophy of the mucosal papillae begins. If measures are not taken in time, a malabsorption of elements in the small intestine develops. That is, beneficial substances stop entering the blood from food.
Back in 1972, scientists M. Ament and C. Rubin described protein intolerance in a six-week-old child, which developed one day after switching him to soy milk. Examination of his jejunum revealed a pattern consistent with untreated gluten intolerance .
Symptoms
The main manifestations are:
vomit;
massive diarrhea (diarrhea);
fever with chills;
leukocytosis.
Diagnostics
The diagnosis is established based on the detection of atrophy of the mucous membrane of the small intestine and its disappearance after eliminating foods containing soy protein from the diet.
In this case, it is necessary to carry out a differential diagnosis with other types of malabsorption disorders.
Treatment
The main method of treating soy intolerance is a strict lifelong exclusion from the diet of products containing soy. In the acute period, treatment is the same as for other malabsorption disorders. It is described in this article .
When foods containing soy are excluded from the diet, the mucous membrane of the small intestine is restored.
