Corn – beneficial properties, corn oil, diseases

Corn is an annual plant; at the top of a tall stem a panicle with staminate spikelets develops, and below there are complex inflorescences that look like cobs with pistillate flowers, a long style, and bilobed stigmas.

Description and composition

The latest scientific research has shown that the nutritional and healing properties of corn are very high.

It has been noticed that in those countries where corn is a traditional and staple food - in the form of porridge (mamalyga, polenta, abyst) or as bread, the number of diseases, especially cardiovascular diseases, in the population is significantly less than in nearby areas where it is practically not used for food.

Corn oil

The oil contained in corn and sold as a separate product has valuable qualities. It contains useful substances such as

  • unsaturated fatty acids - up to 80 grams per 100 grams of oil;
  • phosphatides;
  • unsaturated fatty acids - linoleic, linolenic, arachidonic.

Unsaturated fatty acids form soluble compounds with excess cholesterol that are easily excreted from the body, and thus reduce the risk of deposition of cholesterol plaques on the walls of blood vessels, which means the development of atherosclerosis is prevented.

In addition, linoleic acid, which is not synthesized by the human body but comes from food, prevents the formation of blood clots.

Corn oil phosphatides regulate cholesterol levels, participate in the construction of cell membranes, and play an important role in the function of brain tissue.

In addition, this oil increases the tone of the gallbladder, enhances the contraction of its walls, and regulates excretory function. 1-1.5 hours after taking a dose of corn oil, the tone of the gallbladder decreases, and it is again filled with fresh bile.

In addition to these substances, corn contains:

  • glutamic acid,
  • vitamins B1, B2, B6, B12, C, D, E, K,
  • provitamin A,
  • many mineral elements, the main of which are potassium, phosphorus, iron, copper, nickel.

For what diseases is it used?

For vitamin deficiency and weakening of the body, include dishes made from corn in the diet.

Roasted corn kernels with honey are used for diarrhea .

Extracts, decoctions, infusions of pistillate columns (corn silk) are used for treatment

  • cholecystitis,
  • cholangitis,
  • hepatitis,
  • cystitis,
  • with edema of cardiac origin,
  • gallstone and urolithiasis.

How to prepare an infusion?

Corn silks are collected during the period of mass flowering.

Brew the raw material in an amount of 10-15 grams with one glass of boiling water, cool and strain. Take one tablespoon every three hours.
