Praziquantel (biltricide) – regimen of use, indications, contraindications

Mechanism and scheme of action

It is an anthelmintic drug, the effect of which is to increase the permeability of the membranes of helminth cells for calcium ions, which causes generalized muscle contraction, turning into paralysis and death of the parasite.

Contraindications are:

  • hypersensitivity;
  • children under 4 years old;
  • 1st trimester of pregnancy;
  • cysticercosis of the eye.

Application diagram

Cestodoses ( diphyllobothriasis (wide tapeworm), teniarinhoz (bovine tapeworm), taeniasis (pork tapeworm)):

Adults and children over 4 years of age should take 5-10 mg/kg body weight once.

Hymenolepidosis (dwarf tapeworm):

It is recommended for adults and children over 4 years of age to take 15-15 mg/kg body weight once a day.

Cysticercosis (pork tapeworm):

take adults 0.8 g per day, children over 4 years old – 15 mg/kg body weight per day (highest daily dose – 0.8 g) in 3 divided doses while taking prednisone, which is prescribed 2-3 days in advance before treatment. The course is 30 days.

Fascioliasis (liver fluke), fasciolopiasis, paragonimiasis, other trematodes:

adults and children over 4 years of age are prescribed 75 mg/kg body weight per day in 3 doses for 1 day, for paragonimiasis for 2 days.

Schistosomiasis:

adults and children over 4 years of age should take 40-75 mg/kg body weight per day in 2-3 divided doses. The course is 10-28 days.
